From searching to finding, from dust and hammering to furniture in place, from house to home. This is our Happy Go Lucky.

Hair represents strength and beauty. In some cultures hair is believed to be your connection to Mother Earth. Her hair means tangles and knots, getting caught in her food, her backpack, her jacket. Her hair trails behind her when she runs and leaps, falls and tumbles when she collapses from a backbend or laughter, splays around her sleeping face. Her hair represents childhood.
She wore her long locks with pride, her dedication and discipline showing in every inch. I only saw tangles and hassle. I began a campaign to encourage her to cut her hair by making it an act of good. Her precious locks would be donated to a child suffering from hair loss. But the thought of losing 12 inches was too much so I waited. With her 12th birthday approaching I decided to renew my campaign, using the significance of this date as a motivator to leave elementary school behind with a fresh new look for middle school. To my surprise she agreed. And to my surprise I was overcome with emotions as I saw those precious locks falling to the floor. Each lock held a carefree, childhood memory. And as I watched what I thought would be a joyous, celebratory moment I felt sad for what we were losing and what I will continue to lose.

Lucas competed in Dancemakers last January, the first and last competition of the 2020 season. After months of practice and rehearsal it was disappointing, to say the least, to miss out on the best part of dance, performance. And many of these routines that had required hours of practice to achieve perfection never saw the stage but once. This season we were grateful for dance as the sole outlet for getting out of the house, seeing friends and doing something that provided achievement and fulfillment. After 7 months of practice and rehearsals, the dancers got to take the stage and compete once more. I am so proud of these talented dancers and supportive team mates. Their hard work, dedication and discipline secured all the routines the highest score with The Re-Up and Sinking earning Judges awards.

Long before I bought our home in Rehoboth Beach my parents lay my roots. Roots of possibility and potential, of dreams and hard work, of faith and family. Life was hard and easy because of my parents steadfastness and their belief that their children would achieve and that their love would bind us always.

We celebrated 13 on the cusp of lockdown; friends warned and armed with antibacterial wipes everyone still showed up and celebrated. A year later with schools just starting to reopen and not sure how comfortable people felt, an outdoor venue was selected in the hopes a few would show up. All showed up. So either everyone is itching to get out or they just love this kid.
Before our country went into lockdown, Chinatowns were suffering losses up to 70% of their sales due to anti-Asian bigotry. San Francisco’s Chinatown is the largest Chinatown outside of Asia as well as the oldest Chinatown in North America. Once boasting over 930 storefronts a mere 150 are operating today. Chinatowns aren’t just restaurants and tourist attractions, they are cultural and financial hubs for generational communities. With Lunar New Year approaching on February 12th, a time of year that provides most of the revenue for these businesses, the streets will remain largely quiet with parades cancelled. These are photos taken of San Francisco’s Chinatown in January 2019.

Gratitude is like the sea
Vast and enveloping
When you are in it you see no end
From small ripples to giant waves
Lean into it and it will keep you afloat

My baby is ten. My last, my youngest has achieved a new milestone of double digits. He is constantly testing, pulling, stretching against the binds I put on him. Seemingly aimless, boundless energy with no purpose he is very intentional and knows that his desired outcome is always achieved, to have my attention.
