Our annual girls trip to New York City is about so much more than the trite description implies. It is about reunion, it is about discovery, and it is all about friendship.

It is about tradition

It is about new experiences

IMG_8488 IMG_8497 IMG_8500It is about seeing this girl grow. Seeing her scamper up the side of a rock without hesitation in two seconds flat, seeing her cock her hip to the side, seeing her wink with a thumbs up, seeing what’s beneath that dazzling smile and seeing the satisfaction on her face when she had me in stitches.

It is about stealing time with my daughter. With all my attention she shines. Her independence navigates her through the crowded city streets and her confidence hails taxi cabs and orders lemonade. This city fits her like a glove.

IMG_8630 IMG_8436It is about catching up on days, weeks, months of saved conversations. It is about interrupting and completing sentences. It is about the wink and the nod that indicates “you get me.”

It is about finding art on the streets

It is about spontaneity and fashion

It is about being with our girls. It is about continuing a tradition.

It is about this friendship. This friendship that was formed by their mothers when they were six months old has become a friendship of their own. They were not prodded or bribed to laugh and giggle endlessly. And no matter how much they tired of the city, of the walking, of our cameras they never tired of each other.

And it is all about New York City

“In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.”
– Khalil Gibran
