They met when they were four months old. Her mother and I quickly bonded over recent staycations at Starwood properties in DC and the nightmare of our recent deliveries at the hands of the same ObGyn. Future coffees and playdates were quickly scheduled and unbeknownst to them a lifelong friendship was being forged.
Six years later my daughter asks me two days before their visit “Mommy, are you excited like me?” Six years later I see her face light up like with no other. Six years later I witness my daughter having her first best friend.
Living over 300 miles apart makes a lot of things impossible. For this day they celebrated their birthdays together, blowing out candles and making wishes together, like she lived next door.

“If you are a dreamer come in
If you are a dreamer a wisher a liar
A hoper a pray-er a magic-bean-buyer
If youre a pretender com sit by my fire
For we have some flax golden tales to spin
Come in!
Come in!”
― Shel Silverstein
I teared up reading this post. While 300 miles away, I will always, always be right next door.
