The Teri and Shari Malone Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to recognizing and developing the talents of selected eighth grade students from Loudoun County schools through scholarship grants. The Foundation is committed to remembering a talented set of twins who tragically lost their lives shortly after finishing their eighth grade year in school. Friends of the family established this Foundation to honor the girls in 1991.
Middle schools in Loudoun County, and select dance studios, choose the current year’s recipients, selected in one of the five areas of study in which the Malone twins themselves excelled. While Lucas is a student in Fairfax County because he studies dance in Loudoun County they were able to grant an exception. We are grateful for this recognition, for the staff and coaches at the dance studio that believe in him, that inspire him and that gave him this opportunity.

Lucas competed in Dancemakers last January, the first and last competition of the 2020 season. After months of practice and rehearsal it was disappointing, to say the least, to miss out on the best part of dance, performance. And many of these routines that had required hours of practice to achieve perfection never saw the stage but once. This season we were grateful for dance as the sole outlet for getting out of the house, seeing friends and doing something that provided achievement and fulfillment. After 7 months of practice and rehearsals, the dancers got to take the stage and compete once more. I am so proud of these talented dancers and supportive team mates. Their hard work, dedication and discipline secured all the routines the highest score with The Re-Up and Sinking earning Judges awards.

We celebrated 13 on the cusp of lockdown; friends warned and armed with antibacterial wipes everyone still showed up and celebrated. A year later with schools just starting to reopen and not sure how comfortable people felt, an outdoor venue was selected in the hopes a few would show up. All showed up. So either everyone is itching to get out or they just love this kid.

Our first born, bearer of our many firsts, now our first teenager. Too cool for school, beyond his years, no. His height might confuse many but he’s still just a silly kid inside.

This was the moment I held you for the first time. After hours of labor, some small panics and too many doctors you were measured, cleaned and swaddled and placed into my arms. You were crying so I sang “Dream A Little Dream of Me”, a song I had been singing to you in utero. You instantly calmed down and tried to open your eyes to see me. This was the moment.

Remember that time you blew out Oliver’s birthday candle? We had just finished singing “Happy Birthday” and before Oliver even knew what happened the candle was out. But I knew exactly what happened. With friends and family gathered around, with cameras rolling, this moment was documented forever. Look at Oliver’s and Penny’s faces, still waiting to blow out the candle that is no longer lit. But your face reveals your guilt. You were only five. Just a young child yourself. Unfair to ask you to be fair, unfair to ask you to be considerate of your baby brother, unfair to ask you to practice self-control. And look at my face, but worse, look at my hand. I have loved and hated this photo. I loved it for the honesty and realness of a mother in a moment of little patience with three children five and under and I have hated this photo because it captured me at my worst. Yet looking at this photo now as you turn twelve I have a different appreciation of this photo. Since the day you were born you carry our dreams and expectations. Your five was different than Penny’s five and Oliver’s five.
