To celebrate Penny’s 8th birthday we hosted a cooking party with chef Wendi James of Rutabaga Sweets. The menu included handmade cheese ravioli, fresh tomato sauce and garlic bread. The kids were attentive and focused and created some delicious food! Penny loves to cook, what a treat it was to share this with her friends.

There is no shortage of guilt as a mother and not making homemade meals every weeknight is one of the many sources. But to my children “making them delicious food” is something I do best and often and for this I was rewarded to a changing of roles. Each of them donned their homemade chef hat and transformed our kitchen into a restaurant for Mother’s Day.

Each year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington, DC. The gift and annual celebration honor the lasting friendship between the United States and Japan and the continued close relationship between the two countries. Today’s National Cherry Blossom Festival has grown from modest beginnings to the nation’s greatest springtime celebration spanning four weekends and including events such as the Blossom Kite Festival which showcases the creativity of kite makers and skill of fliers from across the US and other countries.

Three very special guests visited Mrs. Clifford’s kindergarten class at Floris Elementary School; Watt Hamlett, Jill Vinson and Robert E. Squirrel, you can call him Bob. Kat Clifford, who was raised in Reston, Virginia, was one of the first to buy Watt and Jill’s first children’s book, Reston A to Z. Watt and Jill shared their story and the process behind creating the charming images while entertaining all twenty two questions and connections from these inquisitive kindergarteners.
