Bringing the kids to Rehoboth Beach since 2007 we’ve made a lot of traditions. With Happy Go Lucky, celebrating Penny’s birthday has become one of them. Her second time bringing friends to celebrate her birthday, she got to share some of her favorite things in one of our family’s favorite places while creating traditions and memories that are all her own.

While we don’t often get here the same weekends, it is great when we get to enjoy our time in Rehoboth with the Guerreros. Jonny brought several friends and the kids all had a great time hanging out, including Oliver taking the grand prize in Dog Pound.

What an enlightening experience it is to see our kids grow. To see their personalities evolve as who they are and will be is being formed, so easily manipulated and influenced by us as parents and by others around them. While also parts immutable. We only get one shot at it. We try to re-do our mistakes, surround them with goodness and give them space to have their own journey. And we hope our mistakes don’t leave a mark and that the goodness sticks.
At dinner Milly said she loves that Penny doesn’t care what others think and Sierra said Penny is wise, being a constant source of advice. Her brothers think she is athletic and silly and both tease and admire in equal parts. Her cousins look at her, the only girl, and think she is the coolest because she is like them, but a girl. And I see my little girl that was so determined and kind, my elementary aged girl that was crafty and reserved, my teenage girl that is self-assured, funny, grounded and honest. And while change will continue, who she is at her core is immutable; her father’s daughter with many friends and an easy going nature that is industrious and confident who will take feedback and encouragement as fuel for reaching higher who holds no ego but won’t take any shit and will always seek me for the comfort only I can give.
